Local Government NetZero Roundtable

The Local Government NetZero Roundtable will be held in Canberra during November 2022 (update – new dates 21-22 March 2023).

This event is aimed at local government sustainability practitioners, policy makers and executives tasked with designing and implementing council initiatives to achieve NetZero.

The Roundtable will see councils share their:

  • success stories and achievements;
  • learnings and next steps; and
  • challenges, policy gaps and advocacy agenda.

The NetZero Roundtable will share sustainability insights and practical experiences that will encourage replicability of successful initiatives to move Australia closer towards its emission reduction targets.

Background

With the election of a new Federal Government there is renewed enthusiasm in tackling climate change. We need a sense of hope, meaningful connection and exchange of sustainability ideas and initiatives.

In a country as broad and diverse as Australia, this is an important opportunity for local government sustainability practitioners, policy makers and executives to come together and share their approaches to progressing NetZero.

The NetZero Roundtable promises to be an engaging, interactive and thought-provoking event with local government sustainability practitioners driving the NetZero discussion.

Roundtable Themes

The Roundtable presentations will be aligned against the following themes:

  • Power Purchasing Agreements
  • EVs and Charging Infrastructure
  • Community Batteries, Microgrids and VPP
  • Electrifying Council Operations
  • Waste and Circular Economy
  • Mobilising the Community – Electrifying Everything

The Roundtable themes have been designed to inspire and equip the local government sector to lead their communities towards NetZero.

Presentations

Presentations will be based on programs and projects developed and implemented by councils progressing their NetZero ambitions.

Councils will use a case-study approach to:

  • detail their initiative/project;
  • capture the challenges and learnings;
  • explore the benefits achieved; and
  • confirm the opportunity for replicability across the sector.

Thought Leaders

Roundtable presenters will be drawn from local government sustainability thought leaders. Presenters are encouraged to participate over the two days and contribute their experience and knowledge to the discussion and deliberations.

Roundtable discussions will be focused on exploring NetZero issues and challenges, policy gaps and advocacy agenda.

Consolidated Resource

Each presenter will be required to provide a 3-5-page snapshot of their council’s project, which will be made available as a consolidated resource to the local government sector to assist with their journey towards NetZero.

The success of the Roundtable will be measured by its ability to influence replicability of proven NetZero initiatives across local government.
